Rumex Connexions, 2023

Rumex Connexions | Installation Performance and Poetry Collaboration with Airini Beautrais | Brydee Rood 2023

An intimate Winter interdisciplinary, project Rumex Connexions centred on the Broadleaf Dock plant - Rumex obtusifolius, a common weed in Whanganui area and around New Zealand. Although classed as an agricultural pest, dock has a long history of culinary, medicinal and ritualistic uses.

Rumex Connexions featured a live installation and poetry performance collaboration by artist Brydee Rood and writer Airini Beautrais. Shared kai was created utilising Rumex seeds grown, harvested, dried, roasted and ground into a bespoke rich, dark flour. The kai was prepared in a workshop earlier in the afternoon, using locally foraged and rescued ingredients.

Rumex Connexions was generously supported by the Whanganui District Council Creative Communities Scheme and Whanganui Kai Hub.

The performance was photographed by Jade George.
